August Beauty Boxes - Birchbox vs Glossybox.

I've been subscribed to two beauty boxes, Glossybox and Birchbox, for probably around three years. In case you've been living under a rock, subscription boxes like these two involve paying a small monthly fee and receiving a box of 5 different sample products for you to try. I love getting little treats in the post, and new products to play with - I've definitely found some favourites from these boxes! But which would I recommend? I thought it was only fair to compare the August boxes from both and see which comes out on top.

Birchbox

This month Birchbox isn't a box at all, it's a bag! The little neoprene Scuba Birchbags come in four colours with adorable names: Coral Reef, Blue Fin, Yellowtail and Pink Pufferfish, which I received. I quite like this change, keeps things interesting, but it does have the downside of meaning the leaflet telling you about the products is slightly crammed in, looking a little like an afterthought. The bags aren't the most beautiful things in the world (mine is pretty crushed and creased which doesn't look great) but I'll probably use it as a make up bag to chuck into my handbag. But what was inside the bag?

Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Mulberry, RRP £10.50, sample size worth £7.
Yay, choices! I love when you get the option to pick one of your samples. This came in either the colour Mulberry, a beautiful dark purple, or a dark brown called Expresso. This pencil is smooth and glides on evenly, meaning it won't snag. It can be smudged out easily, or you can leave it as a solid line. I'm excited to try this out!

PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Volumizing Lifting Spray, RRP £18.50 (card says £17 but website says £18.50!), sample size worth £3.78 (30ml).
I've recently chopped off all my own hair in a fit of rage with it, but it's still super thick and heavy. I'm interested to see if this can stop my hair from being so flat and boring. Apparently it's also great for nourishing and strengthening the hair which no one can turn down!

Balance Me Radiance Face Mask, RRP £18, sample size worth £3.60 (15ml).
I love Balance Me products, and I love a good face mask, so I'm looking forward to giving this a shot. My skin is in desperate need of a good cleanse and exfoliate, and this looks like it might be perfect, being full of kaolin, walnut shells and fruit acids.

anatomicals the buff stuff citrus body scrub, RRP £3.99, sample size worth £1 (50ml).
I'm a big fan of the anatomicals packaging, it's very eye catching and quirky. Their products are usually bloomin' awesome too. I'm really awful for neglecting my body in terms of exfoliating and moisturising, but this smells so good it's going into the shower immediately!

Merci Handy Antibacterial Hand Cleansing Gel in Flower Power, RRP £2.90, full size sample (30ml).
Honestly I don't tend to use hand sanitisers very often, I'm very forgetful so don't often have them on me. I'm not sure I'll get a huge amount of use out of this but it smells nice!

Bonus item: NUDE Perfect Cleanse Omega Cleansing Jelly, RRP £32.
There's no weight on this sample so I can't tell you how much it's worth, but it's pretty small so probably less than £1. I do love trying out new cleansers and seeing what works best, but realistically I'm never going to spend £32 on it. I'll definitely try it out though!

Total box value: £19.28 Total box price: £12.95 (£10 + £2.95 p&p)

Honestly I wasn't blown away by this month's products. I usually love Birchbox, but this month felt a little bleh. I'm disappointed as usually the full size product is a make up item, or at least a skincare item I would use, whereas a £3 hand sanitiser isn't really that interesting. I'll probably use most of the items, just because I hate wasting them, but none of them are really that exciting to me. Nowhere near as good as last month!

Glossybox

Glossybox is celebrating it's 5th birthday this month, and has teamed up with designer Rae Feather to create this box. I really like the design, the monogram is cute and the soft grey is the perfect complement to the pale pink. I love opening up a Glossybox and seeing that delicate tissue paper tied up with a box (which inevitably becomes my cat's newest plaything). It's like a trusty friend, you always know what you're going to get with Glossybox packaging, and yet I now have so many of the 'collectors edition' boxes because they are too pretty to throw away! Inside my Glossybox this month I got...

MUA Eyeshadow Palette in Hall of Fame, RRP £4, full size sample.
Again, we got a choice this month with Glossybox. There were four MUA palettes to choose from, and it was a difficult decision! I eventually went with Hall of Fame because, as tempted as I was by the brighter colours, the last thing I wanted was a palette I'd never use. I'm really impressed with these so far, they are beautifully pigmented and I'm excited to create some new looks with them.

Mudmasky Facial Detox Purifying Recovery Mask, RRP £59 (says £53 on the GB card but the website says £59!), sample size worth £19.67 (20ml)
Now this is clearly a luxury item. Most people can't blow anywhere near £60 on a mask, so I'm really excited to try this and see if it's worth the price. I'm pretty impressed with the sample size, it's 20ml so a third of the full size product. Pretty generous when you see how much that's worth.

Spa To You Deep Pore Facial Cleansing Brush, RRP £6.99, full size sample.
One of my favourite things about these boxes is getting new tools to use. It was actually a Birchbox that introduced me to my very first (free!) BeautyBlender, and I've got a variety of excellent brushes, some eyelash curlers and now this cleansing brush. I'd actually recently considered trying one of these out so I'm very pleased to have received this.

Cowshed Wild Cow Invigorating Body Lotion, RRP £20, sample size worth £2.
Can't go wrong with Cowshed, plus there's lemongrass in this which is one of my favourite scents. As I said, I'm useless with body care so this'll be joining the body scrub in my shower for a zingy morning boost!

Rae Feather Mini Monogram Pochette, RRP £20, Glossybox exclusive.
Another bag! That's cool though, I'll definitely find a use for it. I checked out how much Rae Feather products sell for and I can see why this has such a pricey RRP. It's not the most exciting thing ever and if I'm really honest I'd have preferred another beauty product but it's a birthday 'celebration' for Glossybox so it's all good.

Total box value: £70.66 Total box price: £13.25 (£10 + £3.25 p&p)

This month Glossybox really knocked it out of the park for me, even though there are only 3 actual beauty products due to the cleansing brush and bag. I'm going to get so much use from all of these and I'm so excited to try them. My favourite thing is definitely the eyeshadow palette, which is such good value for money but really brings up the overall excitement for this box. I've got to admit, recently I've been disappointed in Glossybox's quality of products but the August box is right back to form. I can also see on the leaflet that next month's box will have a (spoiler!) sample of the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara that I've been trying to resist! I'm impressed GB, well done, and happy birthday!

The Winner

In terms of value for money, quality of items inside, box design and even delivery (it arrived the day after my dispatch email; it does dispatch later in the month than Birchbox does), all four points go to Glossybox this month. Honestly, that is really unusual for me as Birchbox is usually my bae, but I'm so impressed with the August Glossybox. Wonder who'll win next month?!

Let me know if you enjoyed this post and definitely let me know what you thought of my boxes, or your own if you got different products!

    1. I don't blame you, a year ago Glossybox was making me sad at how rubbish it was. It's really stepped it's game up but I wonder if it'll continue? Xx
