What I Read In July.

Last month I rambled on for ages about all the books I managed to power through. This month, I kind of lost my way a bit. You know how it is - when it's summer you want to be outdoors enjoying yourself, rather than curled up with a book which is much more of a winter activity. That's part of the reason why I only managed to get through three books in the past month, but what a variety of books they were!

Glossybox July 2017.

So this is the latest I've ever done a beauty box post, mainly cause I just completely forgot. July was a weird old month and I got a bit sidetracked by 'real life' so whoops, soz. Also, my photos are atrocious so overall this is a shit-show of a post (really selling this aren't I?) but it felt weird to not post it.

Mental Health + Relationships - with Becky from Stronger Together!

Isn't the internet amazing? This platform has given us somewhere to share how we feel, help and support each other, and really achieve things that will make a difference. Becky, who runs the blog Stronger Together, is a brilliant example of this. Not only does she blog, she also runs a Twitter chat which offers help and advice, and has her own charity project that sends out boxes of treats to people who deserve them. What a truly special lady she is!

Birchbox July 2017.

As much as I've been enjoying the sunshine (sometimes), it's been strange seeing as I've not seen my husband since mid-May. However, we've finally booked our honeymoon - despite being married for two years already - and we're going on holiday next month! So I was very excited to see whether July's beauty boxes had anything in the that would be coming on holiday with me!

Mental Health + Relationships - with Mami Skilts!

Isn't blogging amazing? On the one hand, you can find excellent tips and reviews for beauty, fashion and books, but on the other, you find bloggers who open up, share their story, and really connect with their readers. Sarah (aka Mami Skilts) is the driving force behind not one, but two blogs, which is very impressive in its own right! But when you read about the challenges life has thrown at her, it's even more remarkable that she finds the time. But I am so glad she does, as her posts are always really well-written, heartfelt and so genuine.

Alcohol and Me.

I feel like I could sum up this whole post in advance by just saying "alcohol makes me even more of a dick than I normally am", but I'm not sure you can really call one sentence a blog post.

What I Read In June.

Ever since I was a young 'un, reading has been one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon. In my opinion, there's nothing better than curling up on a sofa (or, as is usually the case with me, in a bed) and spending a few hours in a completely different reality. Reading is so good at calming me on panicky, anxiety-ridden days, at helping me to see another person's perspective, and at letting me experience thousands of different existences, all from the comfort of my own home.
I noticed that over the last few years, the amount I was reading for fun significantly dropped off. I found myself glued to screens instead, but I've been desperate to stop spending so much time on Netflix and Twitter. I decided to take up a challenge on Goodreads and set myself a goal of reading 52 books in 2017. So far I've read 34, so I'm not doing too badly - I'm 8 books ahead of schedule!

Mental Health + Relationships - with Curious Pandora!

I have been incredibly lucky with the people who have taken part in this series: every single one has had something unique to say, and I feel like each one has taught me something valuable that I hadn't thought of before. This is particularly true of Pandora, who I feel like I am constantly learning things from! Pandora's blog is one of my favourites because it is so individual and full of her personality. It's so refreshing to find a blog that's a bit different, and that actually makes you think. Pandora's definitely does that.

Glossybox June 2017.

Something I've discovered this month is that people on the internet are absolute crooks. Okay, so I already knew that - I mean I have been online for decades - but while Googling the full-size weights of the products in this box, I noticed people on eBay were selling the items individually for a tenner each (at least!). I appear to be missing out on a real money-making scheme...

Mental Health + Relationships - with Abbie Huggan!

In this day and age, in our world full of bloggers who have very carefully curated themes, some of my favourite blogs to read are those who completely buck that trend and talk about anything and everything. I love getting to know a blogger through their posts, seeing their true personalities and finding out what makes them tick. Abbie Huggan, and her blog Over Peach Chic, is a great example of this. Abbie writes about such a wide variety of topics - from university to Disney, to favourites, and chatty posts about her life - there's something for everyone. Abbie is also an absolute sweetheart, so I was really pleased when she agreed to take part in this!

Dear Old Friend...

It's been a while since we last spoke - well over a month since our last brief text exchange. Isn't that strange? For years, I spoke to you every day. I couldn't have imagined this is where we'd end up.

birchbox june 2017

I'm Scottish. I can't cope with heat. June has had my brain melting into a puddle of unproductivity, and I'd apologise but let's be real, you're feeling it too aren't you? I feel like a bit of a summertime Scrooge, but bring back rain - please!

Mental Health + Relationships - with Charlene McElhinney!

In blogging, there are some faces that stand out and really make their mark. People that others naturally gravitate to, who really make an impact and who everyone knows. For instance, I'm sure you all know who Charlene is. She is one of those amazing people who not only blog so beautifully that everyone pays attention, but she has created her own little community that is just growing in strength and members. She's one of the friendliest faces online and has time for everyone. In fact, she's one of the first friends I made on Twitter, and I have always been so thankful for the kindness she's always shown me.

I Don't Need You To Fix Me.

A couple of weeks ago, I had one of my annual "Awkward Mental Health Discussions" with a close relative. Bless them, every so often they make an effort to try to understand me, to ask relevant questions and find out a bit more about my current mental state. But there's always the moment when the questions turn into a blundering, artless attempt to offer a 'cure'. And while I do appreciate it comes from a place of love, it doesn't half frustrate me.

Glossybox May 2017.

I'm really pushing it now, aren't I? Uploading about a beauty box on the last day of the month... I am definitely not fulfilling my aim to stop leaving everything till the last minute. On the other hand, I've used these products a fair amount over the last 3+ weeks, so I feel like I can make some pretty informed reviews.

Birchbox May 2017.

I'm just going to start this by apologising in advance for the weird pink background. Oh, and the fact I'm yet again posting this right at the end of the month when I've had these products for about three weeks. I'm a terrible blogger for many reasons, but I'm sure you already knew that.

Mental Health + Relationships - with Life Through TSG!

I have always believed that it is only in your worst moments that you find out other people's true personalities. It's only when you're at rock bottom that you can look around, see who is still by your side, and count them as a good person and a great friend. It was actually in this very situation that my friendship with Hayley, the blogger behind LifeThroughTSG really began. She reached out to me when I felt the worst I've felt about myself in years, and for that, I am unbelievably grateful.

I'm not the kind of girl who spends lots of money on clothing. ASOS and Boohoo are websites I tend to visit only out of necessity. Clothing for me is just a hassle, but jewellery? Jewellery is the love of my life.

Mental Health + Relationships - with This Stuff Is Golden!

Every so often, I discover a blog that I fall in love with, and I wonder to myself, "How in the hell is this person not a household name?!" I genuinely feel this way about Lauren from This Stuff Is Golden. Her blog is one of the most beautifully written that I've ever seen, and I regularly find myself nodding along with her writing. If you're looking for a witty, honest and deeply personal blog that has a tagline we could all relate to - "Learning how to be the best kind of human" - then look no further. I kind of wish I could keep her blog to myself as my own hidden gem, but she deserves to be recognised for her unreal writing.

Mental Health Awareness Week: Surviving or Thriving?

May is Mental Health Awareness month, and this week is Mental Health Awareness Week, with a focus on Surviving or Thriving? Earlier this week, one of my favourite people, Abbey Louisa Rose, wrote a brilliant post on this topic and tagged me to share my own views. Turns out, I've got quite a lot to say!

Mental Health + Relationships - with A Beautiful Chaos!

Today is the first day of Mental Health Awareness Week, so it's only right that I have one of my absolute favourite mental health bloggers featuring here today. Nicole is amazing -  in fact, you might remember me talking about how much I love her in this post. Since then, she's had a gorgeous rebrand, and A Beautiful Chaos is one of the most supportive, educational and inspiring blogs I've ever read. Her posts are so mature, so open and so brave - Nicole is so strong and constantly motivates me to be better, both at blogging and at life in general!

A Little Sleek & NYX Haul.

I won't lie to you, I bought these items literally months ago. In fact, if you have me on Snapchat you might remember me unboxing them on there. For some reason, I took these photos on a bleak winter's afternoon, and then got a new SD card and promptly forgot all about them. Recently though I've been wearing these a lot, so I definitely wanted to share my thoughts!

Mental Health + Relationships - with Katrina Wilson!

Recently I received a package in the mail. Inside this package were chocolates, every flavour of tea even imaginable, a book mark, an adorable postcard with a Dr Seuss quote, and a card. I'd been having a really horrible time and this was the most wonderful, thoughtful surprise. It came from my amazing friend Katrina - and it reflected exactly what she's like: kind, giving, warm-hearted and always thinking of others. Kat is an absolute gem of a human, and I'm so thankful both to have met her and to have her involved in this series.

Mental Health + Relationships - with No Space for Milk!

You should probably be aware that I'm trying really hard not to fangirl too much right now, but it's very difficult as today's post features my absolute favourite blogger, Rachel. Ever since I started chatting away to her on Twitter, I've been in awe of Rachel's blog, which features some of the most well-written and thought-provoking posts on mental health, lifestyle and wellbeing that I've ever read. Not only that but she's just the loveliest person too.

Glossybox April 2017.

I'll tell you something for free - if I'd known how much time I'd spend worrying about the placement of sequin stars, I'd never have opened the stupid box. As it is, they're now all over my house and I can't be bothered cleaning up. Also, I've realised how sloped my floors are - no matter how much I try I can't make some of these pictures look straight because my house isn't straight. Sorry lads, you'll just have to deal with it.

Mental Health + Relationships - with Abbey Louisa Rose!

Happy Easter troops! Today is a very exciting day for me. I am finally getting to feature one of my favourite bloggers (and one of my favourite people for that matter) on my little corner of the internet. I'm sure you're already aware of Abbey, seeing as she is absolute killing it in the blogging world, but one thing she hasn't spoken about much (yet!) is mental health. I was really honoured when she agreed to take part in this collab, and I hope you'll find her answers as informative, educational and inspiring as I do.

Birchbox April 2017.

Every single month, without fail, the Hermes delivery driver who is supposed to attempt to give me my Birchbox decides that knocking is too much effort. Therefore, every single month, without fail, I have to basically climb inside my recycling bin to collect it, as the lazy bugger just chucks it in there. Over the past few months, there have been a couple of boxes that probably should've stayed there. Is this month any different...?

Mental Health + Relationships - with Jenny in Neverland!

It's time for part two of this little collab series, and I'm thrilled with how well it's already doing. My most viewed blog post last week was the first part featuring Marc Lamberts - and since that was published I've had lots of requests from people who want to join in! It's brilliant that so many people are interested in hearing about people's experiences, and I'm so excited to be sharing Jenny's story today.

RuPaul's Drag Race Tag.

I have three favourite TV shows - The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and then RuPaul's Drag Race. Some might call it a guilty pleasure, but I think you can learn a lot from it, even if it is ostensibly just about men dressing up as women. So when Meggan from Cardigan Jezebel put together this amazing tag, I was so excited for an excuse to talk all things Drag Race!

Finnich Glen + The Devil's Pulpit.

Every so often, I get really sick of being stuck indoors. I'll demand that my husband drives me somewhere for some sort of adventure, but usually, neither of us can think of where we'd like to go. Googling usually brings up the same places time and again, either somewhere we've recently visited, or somewhere too far away for a day trip, but still I love scanning through the articles invitingly titled '20 places to visit in Scotland before you die'. And thank the lord I did, otherwise, I'd still be completely unaware that this place existed.

Okay, for real, though. This is the last Lush haul I'm going to do for a while... hopefully. I've splashed out at Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day - enough is enough! Mental Health + Relationships - with Marc Lamberts!

Being an absolute motor-mouth on Twitter has its benefits, namely in the fact I've met some bloomin' wonderful people. A lot of these talented, creative individuals openly talk about their mental health, and I wanted to get them one-on-one for a chat about how their mental health impacts on their relationships with those around them.

Birchbox March 2017.

How is it nearly the end of March? I swear Christmas was about five minutes ago, and now we're being treated to sunny days and double figure temperatures! I'm not complaining, but as usual, this year is racing past. I'm so excited to ditch the scarves and gloves and swap the dark lips and golden smokey eyes for pretty pink and peach makeup shades. Bring it on Spring!

The Dangers of Worn Out Car Tyres.*

In 2011, my family and I were making the 400+ mile journey back to Edinburgh from my nanny's funeral in Salisbury. It had been a long day, and we were all more than ready to get home. At about 6pm, we were in the outside lane of the M6, surrounded by lorries and commuters, going at least 70mph while attempting to overtake. It was then that we heard a funny noise, like the sound your tyre makes when you accidentally stray into the hard shoulder - our tyre had blown. Within a matter of seconds, the car was out of control, swerving all over the place, before we crashed into the central reservation.

"Tell Her I'm Not Here".

When I was about 14, there was this boy that every girl I knew fancied. He was beautiful - at least to a group of girls who listened to Nirvana and spent entire weekends sitting watching our boy friends skate. One miraculous night, he kissed me. In fact, we spent an entire 'night' at the under-18s club we went to (I swear this was cooler than it sounds; we were all steaming drunk regardless) just kissing. At the end of the night, he gave me his home phone number (because I am actually old enough to remember when not everyone had a mobile) and told me to call him. So I did. Twice. Both times I had lovely conversations with his mother, but on the second call, I actually heard him telling her to say he wasn't there.

Lush Mother's Day 2017 Haul.

All right, I'll just go ahead and say it. I think Lush Cosmetics are trying to bankrupt me. The Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's and now Mother's Day collections have all been in such quick succession, but so good that I've not been able to resist them. I also know full well that the Easter collection is just round the corner. I actually need help: please, someone, take my bank card away...

Glossybox February 2017.

If there's one thing Glossybox do a lot better than Birchbox, it's curate a theme. Obviously, February is the month of Valentine's Day, and Glossybox really brought a delicate and pretty romance-inspired feel to their box and the products inside. Who needs a Valentine's Day date when there are beauty and skincare treats to enjoy?

Birchbox February 2017.

I'm such a good blogger. Not only has it taken me nearly the whole month to write this post (lol whoops), I managed to lose the outside of my Birchbox before I could take any of the photos for it. I haven't posted about my beauty boxes for a few months, and not just because I'm inherently lazy. Birchbox in particular really let me down lately, with boring boxes full of cheap, crap products. I'd been waiting for them to get their mojo back.

Before anyone says it, yes I have a problem. No, I can't stop buying Lush products. The fact that I have well over 100 bath bombs and bubble bars waiting to be used doesn't stop me stocking up on more, and although I have really tried to resist the Valentine's range (these came out in mid-January and I've waited till now to get my hands on them), I ended up giving in and buying everything that interested me. Whoops.

Time Travelling at New Lanark!*

New Lanark is one of the most attractive villages you're likely to come across. Nestled in a gorge on the River Clyde, the beautiful scenery and impressive buildings combine to form a dreamy little place where it's easy to spend hours just taking in the sights. However, this wee dreamboat of a village has much more to offer - it's home to the New Lanark World Heritage Site and Visitor Centre, which offers a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century life here when the village was home to thousands of people working in the cotton spinning mills. When I was invited along to visit the site as part of Visit Scotland's year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, I jumped at the chance to explore a place that changed the lives of the working class.

Is There Such A Thing As Being Too Polite?

A few months ago, I posted a tweet asking if anyone else had someone on their timeline who was constantly very aggressive towards other people, and had a know-all attitude. I'd noticed someone who was consistently giving their opinion in other people's conversations, and wasn't very nice about it. 35 people liked that tweet, so I guess I wasn't alone in facing that issue. However, one person responded basically telling me that they thought being an arsehole to people was a good thing, and even though I responded politely, she went on to unfollow me and subtweet me saying that people who are overly nice are the disturbing ones and calling me uptight and fake. That got me thinking, is there such a thing as being too polite?

2017: We've Been Waiting For You.

2016 was a rough year for a lot of us, and I for one am so pleased it's finally over. Although I did go to some lovely places, and do some fun things, there were just so many more cons than pros, and I don't think I made it to the end of July before I was dreaming of a fresh start. But while the premature deaths of many of our favourite icons had me uttering expletives on what felt like a daily basis, it also reminded me that life is very, very short, and you need to make every day count.
