A Little Sleek & NYX Haul.

I won't lie to you, I bought these items literally months ago. In fact, if you have me on Snapchat you might remember me unboxing them on there. For some reason, I took these photos on a bleak winter's afternoon, and then got a new SD card and promptly forgot all about them. Recently though I've been wearing these a lot, so I definitely wanted to share my thoughts!

I am a sucker for eyeshadow palettes, and I am an even bigger sucker for eyeshadow palettes made up of neutral shades. I already own at least three Sleek palettes, and I tend to reach for them the most as I think they have great pigmentation, blend well and are really affordable. I got the i-Divine eyeshadow palette in All Night Long and I really like it. There's a mix of shimmer and matte shades, and the colours all work well with each other. I love this palette as you can use it either for a quick, daytime look or for a smokey evening statement eye. Well worth the £8.99!

The next thing I bought was the Sleek Luminous Pressed Powder in shade 1 (£7). I needed a new powder and was intrigued by the idea that this had mica pigment in it to give your skin a glowy finish. I used this as a setting powder while in a rush, and I used the sponge included with the product. It was only then that I realised this shade, the lightest they do, is far too orangey for me. If I'd lightly used a brush I could've pulled it off, but the sponge applied it much too heavily and I looked patchy and weird. To be honest, when you have red undertones to your skin, most foundations can be a bit yellowy. Applying this over the top really exacerbates that, so I tend to use this now as a very, very subtle powder foundation on days where my skin isn't too bad. The formula is lovely, and if this was translucent I think it'd be perfect. So frustrating!

I also got this Bronzer Block in the shade Light (£7.49). I love Sleek for blush and contour products, so I was really excited by this. It has three bronzer shades and one blush, and you can use them separately or lightly swirl a brush over all four for a unique blend of colour. These are, again, quite warm toned so need a light touch and good blending to avoid looking orange, but they are lovely. The formula is soft and so easy to blend, and the pigmentation is good. They also lasted really well on my skin - particularly the blusher.

Lastly from Sleek, the love of my life. I know everyone and their mum already owns this, but I have resisted for so long and just lusted from afar. Well, I caved. How could I resist this, really? The Solstice highlighting palette (£10) is unreal. It contains two baked highlighters, a shimmer powder highlighter, and a cream highlighter. The first time I used this, I whacked a little of the lilac baked highlight (Hemisphere) onto my cheekbones and blended it out with a brush. Oh. My. God. The effect is actually blinding. I can't get over how pigmented these are, and how beautifully they work, especially for the price. I can't recommend this palette enough!

I think I must be the last blogger to try the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, and I think I'm also about to break a few hearts - I don't really love them. I don't buy from Jeffree Star anymore, but before that decision, I'd purchased eight of his Velour Liquid lipsticks (you can find a review for my first two here). I'm sorry to say it, but in my eyes, the NYX lip creams are nowhere near as good.

I think the colour selection is lovely, although I was a little disappointed by how thin the formulas felt. Monte Carlo, in particular, felt a little patchy even to swatch, and the colour wasn't anywhere near as deep a red as I was expecting. Prague was a little less uneven and is a beautiful pink with violet undertones. Usually deep reds with blue undertones are my favourite, but actually, Rome ended up being the colour I've loved the most. It's a pretty brown nude colour with an almost maroon undertone. I wear this loads, it's the kind of colour that would flatter pretty much every skin tone.

My biggest issue with these is just - they aren't matte?! They're creamy and light to wear, but they transfer like crazy and don't dry down to a matte finish. I like them as a lipstick, but I don't think I'd be able to chuck one on and not worry about reapplying for hours - even before I consider eating with them on. Perhaps I'm alone on this, but the claim of 4-5 hours wear is just not accurate for me. However, they are super affordable (£6 each) and there's a really good selection of colours to choose from. Plus I love the shade names!

Ironically, it was the other lipstick I purchased that turned out to be matte. I picked up an NYX Lip Lingerie lipstick in the shade Embellishment, after seeing Hayley rave about it. It's a muted, cool-toned, dusky purple, but I love it. The formula is kind of mousse-like so feels really creamy going on, but actually sets to a matte finish that will last hours. It doesn't dry your lips out at all - in fact, it feels almost hydrating. I am a big fan and will be sure to try out more colours. They're again really reasonably priced, at £7 each.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with what I bought. I do like the NYX lip creams, although I don't think they're as advertised, and I love the Lip Lingerie lipstick I bought. As for Sleek, their products are always high quality in my eyes, especially for the price. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to drool over the Solstice palette some more...

Do you have any of the products I picked up? Or do you have any other drugstore recommendations for me?

  3. I love NYX products - while they are not the nicest, highest end products they are great products at their price point. I haven't tried the colour Embellishment before, however after seeing that here I might just have to give this one a try!

    1. I definitely think the NYX products are really good for their price, and actually lovely products by themselves, I just really don't get why they're marketed as matte when they aren't. I don't mind too much though and use them happily as a liquid lipstick regardless :) xx
