Glossybox October 2017.

Glossybox October 2017

I know that Birchbox was doing a great deed by having a charity-themed box but I have to admit I was disappointed that neither of this month's beauty boxes lent themselves to a full-blown Hallowe'en photoshoot. I tried to jazz it up with some bat fairy lights and spider confetti but I couldn't get as spooky as I wanted because, let's face it, unicorns aren't scary.

Glossybox October 2017

This month Glossybox had two boxes, one for 'mermaids' and one for 'unicorns'. I really liked the design and colour scheme of both, although I'll be honest and say I still don't really understand the theme. Unicorns and mermaids have been everywhere in the beauty world for a while now but I don't really relate them to the transition into colder weather if I'm honest. This feels like a much more summery theme than one for October. Apparently, it's all to do with 'embracing fantasy' which is fine by me.

Makeup Revolution Mermaids vs Unicorns Eyeshadow Palette

Makeup Revolution Mermaids vs Unicorns Eyeshadow Palette | RRP £4 | full-size sample.

I can only assume that this is the palette that inspired the unicorn and mermaid box designs for this month. This pretty rainbow-in-a-palette is the perfect adventurous yet attractive colour selection for transforming yourself into a mythical creature.

I have to admit that not all of the Makeup Revolution products I've tried before have blown me away; they quite often have a poor colour payoff and some have been hard to blend. This palette has actually been a lot better than I expected - the colours are nice and pigmented and they are easy to work with. Of course for boring people like me, these are not everyday colours. There are a few too many blue shades for someone with blue eyes (although they are gorgeous ocean colours) but the purples and dark shades are cute, and it's actually much more versatile than I expected - although I do tend to gravitate towards evening looks. It's a well-priced palette for what you get; even if you don't reach for it every day it pays for itself very quickly.

Sleek Makeup Crème to Powder Blush in Amaryllis

Sleek Makeup Crème to Powder Blush in Amaryllis | RRP £5.99 | full-size sample.

I'm a big fan of Sleek products - in particular, I love their blushers. I own a few of the powder and cream trios, but I was really intrigued by this crème to powder formula. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a gimmick, but still...

The first thing I noticed about this was how nice the packaging is. It feels very luxe and much more expensive than it is. I also really loved the texture of the product; it feels silky and blends into a fine, soft powder finish. This is a pretty intense shade (and the name had me singing the first line of Fancy to myself for days) but once it's blended out it gives a gorgeous deep-rosy flush of colour, perfect for autumnal makeup looks. It also lasts really well, although it can shift the foundation beneath a little, so you do need a light hand with application.

Kawaii Enterprise Brush Cleansing Egg

Kawaii Enterprise Brush Cleansing Egg | RRP £7.99 | full-size sample.

I am unbelievably lazy with cleaning my brushes as I can never be bothered with how long it takes to get all the makeup out. I've seen a lot of these brush cleaning pads around and I've wanted one for ages. Honestly, this is where subscription boxes really come into their own, I keep receiving products I've wanted to try but am too unorganised to buy.

This little gadget is perfect for cutting down how long the dreaded brush clean takes. Just add a little liquid soap or baby shampoo and swirl your brush over the nodules, before getting rid of the excess on the ridges. Simple! I absolutely love this, it saves me so much time and it's so much easier. It's a little small for some of my face brushes, but for the smaller brushes in my collection, it is absolutely perfect. A lifesaver!

Lord&Berry Magic Brow Perfect Eye Brow Pencil in brunette magic brow

Lord&Berry Magic Brow Perfect Eye Brow Pencil in Brunette | RRP £14 | full-size sample.

Another month, another eyebrow product. I don't mind though, I really need help and I'm willing to try pretty much anything. Plus Lord&Berry usually have amazing products, and this was a very unusual product. The tip of the pencil has a marbleised finish, with two colours swirled together so that when you apply it, it mimics the colour variation found in natural brows.

My pet hate is when an eyebrow pencil is too hard to actually use, and you end up dragging it over your face looking for some colour. Thankfully this doesn't have that issue; it's soft and glides on perfectly. For me, this was just too warm in colour and looked a bit gingery. I'm disappointed that the colour doesn't work for me as I really like the actual formula. I'll have to check if there's a better match for me.

Bang Beauty Cream Color in Dolce Pink | RRP £19.50 | full-size sample.

This is my favourite item in the box this month. This beautiful coral-pink shimmery cream is multipurpose, meaning you can use it on your eyes, cheeks and lips. Again, this is packaged beautifully, in a really lovely little glass jar with a classy looking lid and a weight to it that makes it feel like it's good quality (does anyone else think that heavy packaging feels luxurious or is that just me?!).

I personally love this as a cream eyeshadow and blended out as a slick of subtle colour on the lips (don't use too much or it ends up looking like you have a weird frosting on them though!). The colour is beautiful and would work nicely as a highlighter as it really reflects light perfectly. It's so easy to use and blends out perfectly, and being able to use it in so many areas makes it the perfect multitasking product.

Glossybox October 2017

I'm honestly so, so happy with this box. It's been forever since I've had a box primarily focused on beauty and I am living for it. I like skincare as much as the next guy, but there's only so many hand creams I can bear - and I'm sure I'm likely to receive at least three over the next few months. Having such a fun, colourful box - and all of the items being full-sized, no less! - is a rarity but it really makes this subscription worth it to me. Yes, the eyebrow pencil isn't quite for me but I absolutely love all the other products and will get loads of use from them. I'm so pleased - thanks, Glossybox!
