Birchbox July 2017.

As much as I've been enjoying the sunshine (sometimes), it's been strange seeing as I've not seen my husband since mid-May. However, we've finally booked our honeymoon - despite being married for two years already - and we're going on holiday next month! So I was very excited to see whether July's beauty boxes had anything in the that would be coming on holiday with me!

This month, Birchbox has one of the most beautiful designs I've seen for a while. Last month's bag was cute, but it's these little drawer-style boxes that I tend to hang onto, and who can blame me when they are this attractive? The theme for July is 'summer daze', with a selection of six(!) items picked to complement the season.

Benefit Lip & Cheek Stain in Gogotint

Benefit Lip & Cheek Stain in Gogotint, RRP £25.50 for 10ml, sample size worth £6.38 (2.5ml).

This little baby hasn't actually been released yet, so I was pretty excited to try it - yay Birchbox for actually providing an exclusive sample for once! I'll be honest though, lip and cheek stains are usually not my favourite kind of product. They're just not something I'd usually reach for. This, however, is definitely going in my makeup bag for my holiday. It's a lovely sheer wash of colour but still manages to be pigmented and actually look like you're wearing something. It's a deep cherry red colour that I personally prefer on my lips, but also looks lovely on the cheeks - although be aware you really don't need much if you're using it as a blush! This managed to stay put on my cheeks all day, even in the heat of the sun and was completely smudge-proof on my lips. I'm really impressed with this, it's a lovely summery item - and is released in the U.K. on July 15th!

Balance Me Flash Cleanse Micellar Water

Balance Me Flash Cleanse Micellar Water, RRP £16 for 180ml, sample size worth £2.67 (30ml).

I love micellar water because, frankly, I am disgustingly lazy with skincare most of the time. I have tried a fair few with varying results, but this one is near the top of the pile. Balance Me cosmetics are great anyway, as they put such a heavy emphasis on natural skincare - something I love due to my dry and sensitive skin. This worked really effectively at removing makeup, even those last traces of mascara that you think you've got but you realise you haven't when you wake up with panda eyes. I love the no rinse idea, although it did leave parts of my face a tiny bit sticky so I tend to rinse regardless. It definitely leaves my skin feeling calmed and soothed though, but I am not a massive fan of the scent. While it's a natural, floral scent, it's a touch overpowering which I wasn't too keen on.

Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Overnight Recovery

Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Overnight Recovery, RRP £20 for 150ml, sample size worth £4 (30ml).

The concept of this sounded really odd to me - it's a cream that you massage into dry hair before bed, then shampoo out in the morning. I was really sceptical of this, especially as they claim that it absorbs into your hair and scalp to prevent ruining your pillows. Might just be me, but with my absolute mane of a hairdo, it definitely didn't do that - I waited for ages and it was still slightly damp to the touch. However, I was actually really surprised by this. When I washed it out in the morning, my hair was noticeably shinier, less frizzy and softer. I'm really impressed - to the point where I don't mind it getting on my pillowcases! The only thing I'd say is the sample wasn't huge, and with my hair being thick, curly and long, I only got to use this twice. However, from the results I saw, I'd definitely be willing to pay out for the full-size version to give this more of a shot.

Native Unearthed Natural Mineral Deodorant

Native Unearthed Natural Mineral Deodorant, RRP £7.99 for 60ml, no weight on sample size, approx worth £4 (around 20g).

Again, I am a big fan of more natural deodorants and try to avoid aerosols if I can, but my experience has been mainly limited to Lush. I usually use a powder, so I was quite intrigued by the idea of a balm. I was quite surprised to find it had tiny granules in it, but once applied you can't feel them and it absorbs well. This one had antibacterial coconut oil and absorbent arrow root within its ingredients, but the coconut and vanilla combined to smell a bit too much like food for me. I really like the effectiveness of the product, but if I was to purchase this I'd probably go for a different scent.

Tangle Teezer Compact Styler

Tangle Teezer Compact Styler, RRP £12.50, full-size sample.

You know how earlier on I said I was lazy? Well, this is absolute proof of it. I've wanted to buy a Tangle Teezer for years but have never got round to it, so I was delighted to see this in my box. I'm a huge fan of these palm-sized hairbrushes as they are perfect for chucking in a handbag (particularly when they come with a cover like this one) but are actually effective and useful! This is so good for detangling my knotted hair and leave it smooth and soft with no damage. I'm so pleased to own one now!

Kensie Eau de Parfum, RRP £35 for 50ml, sample size worth £1.40 (2ml).

I don't tend to try a lot of perfumes, as I usually just stick to my favourites. Getting samples is therefore surprisingly helpful, as it encourages me to break out of my comfort zone. This is definitely a scent I'd break out for - I absolutely love it. It's a really delicate and unusual scent - a mixture of citrusy mandarin, light hints of rose and sweetness from peach and vanilla. It's very summery and fruity, and I really love it. I just wish the sample was a bit bigger, but next time I buy perfume I'm pretty confident it'll be this one.

Total Box Worth: £30.95
Total Box Price: £12.95 (£10 + £2.95 p&p)
Overall Rating: ★★★★½

birchbox july 2017

I honestly think this is one of the best Birchboxes for ages. I'm really pleased with all the items, they're things I genuinely will use and suit me well - scents of a couple of products aside. I also liked that there felt like there was a theme; all of these products felt very summery and perfect for the time of year. All this combined with the beautiful box design means I'm very happy - although my bank balance won't be when I buy the full-size versions!

What did you make of this month's box? Anything you hate or rate?

  1. Hey, a really positive Birchbox!! I have been wanting to try the tangle teezers for so long as well, but my hair has only recently become long enough to actually warrant buying one haha! Loving the sound of the cheek and lip stain, I've never tried one of those before but I'm tempted to pick it up once it's released since you liked it so much!
