Birchbox October 2017.

I know that every time I write one of these, I start rambling on about how quickly time is going, but seriously, how is it nearly November?! However, I have been really enjoying October. Autumn is by far my favourite season and I have been embracing the Hallowe'en spirit too. I was really hoping for a spooky themed Birchbox this month, but there was a much nobler concept instead.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so Birchbox has teamed up with CoppaFeel! to help raise awareness and work to reduce late detection. Essentially they want to ensure we're all remembering to check our boobs and to recognise which signs and symptoms we need to look out for. Like lots of us, breast cancer has impacted my family and I am really pleased Birchbox are part of such a great cause. Plus the box is so pretty, just look at those gorgeous marble swirls!

ModelCo MegaLash Mascara

ModelCo MegaLash Mascara | RRP £16 (12ml) | sample size worth approx £8 (approx 6ml).

I'm a little sceptical about mascaras in beauty boxes as they can be really hit and miss. I've had great ones like the time I got a Better Than Sex sample or perhaps the best product I've had in a box, but I've also had some crap. Despite this, I love getting a mascara as they're the one product I use on a daily basis; even when I'm having a no-makeup day I'll still whack a bit on so I don't look ill.

This is actually a really good one! I was pleasantly surprised with how much of a difference just one layer of this makes. My eyelashes looked considerably longer and the wand, despite being one of the plastic types I'm usually not hugely keen on, leaves each lash separated beautifully. There's not a clump in sight. I wore this from morning to night for a week, and I was really impressed. It didn't even start to drop until well into the evening, which is pretty good considering how often I forget about makeup and rub my eyes. Overall I really like this and I'll definitely be reaching for it on a daily basis.

Balance Me Pure Skin Face Wash

Balance Me Pure Skin Face Wash | RRP £16 (125ml) | sample size worth £5.12 (40ml).

Birchbox has given me quite a few Balance Me products to try over the months and I've again found them pretty hit and miss. This is a hit though - it's a really effective face wash that I've been using to remove makeup and general grossness at the end of the day. I have had a weird inbuilt prejudice against 'face wash' since I was a teenager; I always felt like they were a lot harsher than anything labelled a 'cleanser'. This has definitely helped to change my mind.

Since using (and nearly finishing) this face wash, I've been really impressed with how soft and clean it has left my skin. It's really gentle but works well, and I would definitely buy this again. The only thing I'm not hugely keen on is the scent - it's a strong and sharp grapefruit fragrance that is just a little bit too much for me.

anatomicals Grab Your Melons Shower Gel

anatomicals Grab Your Melons Shower Gel | RRP £1.50 (50ml) | full-size sample.

This product, and it's cheeky name, are exclusively part of the CoppaFeel campaign - take this into the shower, lather up and check your boobs! I really like that there was a product in the box that tied into the theme, it made the whole message of early breast cancer detection more tangible.

I absolutely love the scent of this - melon, of course. It's fresh, fruity and zesty, and I've really enjoyed this in the mornings. I would say that it didn't last long, 50ml isn't the most generous size ever, especially as that's full-size. It's a nice, moisturising gel and it's obviously an extremely good cause - I just wish there was more of it!

R + Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste

R + Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste | RRP £22 (62g) | sample size worth £2.37 (7.1g).

A dry shampoo in a paste?! Unusual... it has Hawaiian ash in it to help cleanse, something called zeolite powder to absorb oil, and a really lovely coconut and argan oil scent. You take a little of the paste, rub it between your fingers and then massage it in your roots. Sounds simple, right?

Wrong. This is so hard to apply. It doesn't spread at all so it ends up looking clumpy and matted - like you've somehow managed to get lard or something grim in your hair. For me, this did absolutely nothing in terms of absorbing oils or even giving volume - if anything, it just made my hair look even greasier than before. It was massively sticky as well which was grim, I had to wash it out almost immediately. So disappointing as it smells so nice!

NUXE Crème Fraiche de Beauté Moisturiser

NUXE Crème Fraiche de Beauté Moisturiser | RRP £26 (30ml) | sample size worth £13 (15ml).

Ah, Autumn. I love it, but it doesn't half play havoc with my skin. I am already dry-skinned so when it starts getting cold it almost hurts. I'm always looking for the perfect moisturiser to protect and hydrate with - and I think this might actually be a winner!

Something about the mention of 'crème fraiche' made me feel a bit grim, but in practice, this was actually gorgeous. It sinks into the skin so quickly and feels so nice, there's no stickiness or that weird layer you sometimes get sitting on the skin. It genuinely makes my face feel so much better, I'm really impressed with it. Again, the only thing I'm not sure on is the scent. It's a bit ~granny floral~ which I could do without.

Total Box Worth: £29.99
Total Box Price: £12.95 (£10 + £2.95 p&p)
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆

birchbox october 2017

Overall, this box has really, really impressed me. It's been a while since I had a Birchbox I liked quite this much and it appears in my birthday month - what a present! I've discovered some really good products, and this box is for an excellent cause. I am really happy with it! (I mean apart from the dry shampoo, of course!)

Which of these products would you try? Any floating your boat?
